Gori Mora, Burning Desires at UNIT London
Gori Mora's debut solo exhibition with Unit, "Burning Desires," invites us into a vibrant exploration of queer identity, intimacy, and belonging. Through a blend of cozy interiors and outdoor scenes, Mora crafts "safe spaces" using a symbolic language filled with motifs like bitten apples, body parts, and celestial elements, all echoing the nightlife's allure.
Mora's art predominantly unfolds under the cover of night, capturing the romance and mystery of nocturnal sanctuaries cherished by the queer community. Drawing inspiration from Leonora Carrington and Philip Guston, his surreal works provoke curiosity and introspection.
In "Inferno Boulevard," Mora sets a scene in a nighttime cabaret, where a devilish figure and a half-eaten apple evoke themes of desire and rebellion against patriarchal constraints. The juxtaposition of angelic and demonic imagery encapsulates Mora's exploration of the coexistence of sin and divinity.
