Death is a universal experience that has been explored by art, culture, and science for centuries. It is a subject that raises existential questions at the individual, societal, and global levels. The Humboldt Forum is dedicating a rich program to this topic, bringing together a diverse range of voices and perspectives. The program includes an exhibition that explores the different rituals and concepts of death around the world.

Visitors can also participate in workshops, browse a library of books, or celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead with music, performances, and a family program. The Humboldt Forum's program on death is an opportunity to learn about different ways of thinking about and experiencing this universal human experience. It is also an opportunity to explore our own mortality and to ask the big questions about life, death, and what lies beyond.

The Exhibition

How do we live with death? What a good death even mean? What will remain of us? These are the questions that visitors will explore in the exhibition "in_finite. Living with Death." The exhibition uses multimedia and interactive installations to make the topic of death tangible. Visitors can watch a cinematic prologue about the role of Homo sapiens in the Universe, listen to members of different religious communities talk about the afterlife and participate in a video conference with people from twelve countries who accompany the dying.

The exhibition also explores the scientific and medical aspects of death. Visitors can learn about the dying process, the different ways that bodies are handled after death and the Islamic practice of corpse washing. In addition to these personal and individual experiences, the exhibition also confronts visitors with larger questions about death and dying.

How (un)equal are living and dying conditions around the world? What responsibility do we bear for the deaths of other people? And given the current extinction of species, is even our own species at risk of self-extinction? The exhibition "in_finite. Living with Death" is an opportunity to explore the complex and multifaceted nature of death. It is a place to ask questions, to learn about different perspectives and to reflect on our own mortality.

The Humboldt Forum addresses this topic with a polyphonic programme that includes a theatrically staged special exhibition, educational and event programmes, and an accompanying publication.
