Nan Goldin - This will not end well
7 Oct 2023 Exhibition
Nan Goldin stands as one of the most revered and trailblazing artists of our era, her work a powerful testament to the depth and rawness of human experience. After her landmark solo exhibition "I'll Be Your Mirror" at the Stedelijk Museum in 1997, she returns with the deeply anticipated retrospective, This Will Not End Well.
This exhibition provides an expansive journey through her oeuvre as a filmmaker and multimedia artist, offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of her profoundly intimate and, until now, closely guarded private collection. From 1979 to the present, Goldin has masterfully crafted a series of slideshows—immersive visual tapestries composed of thousands of still images paired with eclectic soundtracks. As her work has evolved, so too has her medium.
She has seamlessly integrated moving images, sound recordings, and even archival and found footage, weaving them into the fabric of her narrative. This Will Not End Well captures the full spectrum of her artistic exploration, presenting these works in their most recent and refined forms. The stories Goldin tells are deeply personal, drawn directly from her own life. They traverse a broad emotional landscape—from the scars of her traumatic family history to the vibrant, bohemian world of her friends.
From the celebration of trans lives to the enigmatic wonder of childhood; and from the euphoric highs of drug use to the bleak depths of addiction. These narratives are not only intensely personal but also universally resonant, echoing themes of love and loss that continue to reverberate across generations. The exhibition is a meticulously curated collection of six major works, offering a comprehensive retrospective of more than fifty years of Goldin's artistic journey.
Her slideshows, which have been subject to continual re-editing and refinement over the years, are presented here in their most current and definitive iterations, making this exhibition a truly unique experience. For this occasion, the renowned architect Hala Wardé has collaborated closely with Goldin, designing bespoke structures to house each work.
These spaces are not mere containers but carefully conceived environments that reflect and enhance the essence of the pieces within, creating a village of slideshows that invites visitors into the intimate world of Nan Goldin.
