NENGI OMUKU The Dance of People and the Natural World

7 October 2023 - 3 March 2024

Introducing Omuku's captivating exhibition, The Dance of People and the Natural World, which not only brings her work to a broader UK audience but also aims to spotlight the vibrant contemporary Nigerian art scene. The show, occupying five of Hastings Contemporary's galleries, features over ten pieces created between 2021 and 2023. Omuku explores her profound connection with nature, drawing inspiration from her experiences as a gardener and florist.

Born in Warri, Nigeria, Omuku, a Slade School of Fine Art alumna, employs a unique style using oil paint on gesso-prepared strips of the traditional Nigerian fabric, sanyan. Highlighted in the exhibition are two new works from this year, along with her largest piece, Eden (2022), measuring 224 x 520cms. Eden serves as a monumental depiction of a utopian landscape, inviting viewers to experience a moment of quiet reflection and respite.

The artwork symbolizes a journey from darkness to light, echoing Omuku's theme of finding rest and sanctuary in the natural world. Other notable pieces include Welcome Home (2022) and Lighthouse (2021), featuring spectral figures in dreamlike settings, and Still Life (2021), inspired by Omuku's time as a florist. Repose (2022) and Swing (2022) reflect the influence of Monet's Giverny garden and the artist's exploration of Impressionism.
