Minsuk Cho’s 23rd Serpentine Pavilion, Archipelagic Void, reimagines the traditional pavilion as not a singular structure, but a constellation of smaller, adaptable "islands" encircling a central void. Instead of placing a single building at the heart of the lawn, Cho leaves the center open, with five timber structures of varying shapes and sizes surrounding it, all connected by a steel oculus that draws in natural light. This innovative layout references the Korean madang—a courtyard that links individual spaces for both private and communal use.
Each "island" serves a unique purpose, like content hubs. The Gallery features a sound installation by Jang Young-Gyu, blending natural and traditional Korean sounds to reflect seasonal changes. The largest structure, the Auditorium, offers space for public talks and performances, while The Library of Unread Books houses donated unread books, addressing issues of access and knowledge. There’s also a playful climbing tower and a nod to the Serpentine’s history with a Tea House.
What we admire most about Cho’s approach is how he rethinks space and interaction. The empty center isn't just a void; it's an invitation to engage with the surroundings, to explore these islands of activity. It breaks away from the typical pavilion formula, transforming it into a network of experiences—a bold move that challenges how we use and move through space.
