Christina Quarles's Solo Exhibition at Pilar Corrias Conduit Street

Pilar Corrias exhibits Christina Quarles' new solo exhibition this autumn, featuring seven paintings on canvas and nine works on paper at their new Mayfair space on 51 Conduit Street. In this collection, Quarles explores identity and representation through painting, blending traditional techniques with digital influences. Her work captures the light and colors of L.A.'s sky, incorporating familiar elements like swimming pools and sunsets into intricate compositions.

Quarles' densely painted canvases invite viewers to contemplate her complex forms and examine the nuances of identity, especially as experienced by a queer, multiracial woman in evolving social contexts. Some pieces, like Too Hot to Hoot and Burden Of Yer Own Making, introduce a tilted perspective and explore the physical qualities of the canvas. The use of painted containers plays with fragility, offering insight into Quarles' approach to pattern, figuration, and abstraction, as well as societal critique.

Quarles has created smaller paintings on paper, allowing her to refine her formal language while intensifying the visual experience. This exhibition, Tripping Over My Joy, is her fourth with the gallery and follows successful shows at the Hamburger Bahnhof, MCA Chicago, and the Venice Biennale. Christina Quarles has been represented by Pilar Corrias since 2017, with her first European solo show, Always Brightest Before Tha Dusk, in 2018.
