Civilization: The Way We Live Now is a landmark exhibition that explores the ever-changing, complex fabric of human life across the globe through the lens of photography. Featuring over 150 works by some of the world's most celebrated photographers, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through eight thematic chapters that examine the key aspects of civilization, from the urban environment to social relationships, the movement of peoples and ideas, the exercise of power and authority and the search for escape and new beginnings.

The curation of the exhibition is a collaborative effort by William A. Ewing and Holly Roussell, with the valuable assistance of Justine Chapalay. William A. Ewing, a distinguished author, lecturer, and photography curator, brings his expertise to the forefront. Notably, he served as the director of the esteemed Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, further cementing his contributions to the field.

Throughout his illustrious career, William A. Ewing has captivated audiences with his remarkable exhibitions, showcasing his curatorial prowess at renowned venues in London. His curated works have graced esteemed galleries such as the Serpentine, Whitechapel, and Barbican Galleries, leaving an indelible mark on the city's artistic landscape. Notably, his exceptional vision has also been showcased at prestigious institutions like the Photographer's Gallery, the Welcome Institute, and Somerset House, further solidifying his influential role in the world of photography.

Complementing Ewing's expertise, Holly Roussell brings a unique perspective as a curator and museologist specializing in the captivating realms of photography and contemporary art from East Asia. Presently, Roussell serves as the esteemed curator for the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, a role that allows her to continually explore and present the vibrant artistic expressions emerging from this dynamic region.

This remarkable project is helmed by two exceptional directors who guide its visionary course. Todd Brandow, the Executive Director of the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, skillfully orchestrates the project from Minneapolis to Lausanne, infusing it with his extensive knowledge and passion for the art form. Alongside Brandow, Bartomeu Mari, the esteemed Director of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea, adds his creative stewardship, ensuring a diverse and globally resonant experience for all who engage with the exhibition.

Together, this collaborative team of talented individuals weaves a tapestry of artistic excellence, combining their distinct expertise to curate an exhibition that promises to be a truly remarkable and enriching experience for visitors.

This is not just an exhibition about the past or the present. It is also a meditation on the future, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As Sealy says, "Civilization is not a fixed state. It is a process, a journey, a work in progress. This exhibition is about asking questions, not providing answers. It is about exploring the possibilities of the future, and the choices that we make today."
