IF NOT NOW, WHEN? GENERATIONS OF WOMEN IN SCULPTURE IN BRITAIN 1960-2023 AT SAATCHI GALLERY

Saatchi Gallery headlines its Winter exhibition, If Not Now, When? as part of the Season of Sculpture. Featuring 29 remarkable female sculptors, the exhibition celebrates their artistic contributions from the 1960s to the present day.

Divided into three chapters, the exhibition delves into the concept of time as a lived experience, shaped by evolving cycles that directly impact women.

WOMEN’S TIME: Embraces distinctive feminine values as life givers, preservers, and caregivers.

TUMBLING THROUGH TIME: Explores the materiality and immediate urgency of issues like climate change, emphasizing the essence of time.

THE TIME IS NOW: Addresses pivotal moments in history, uniting works to confront visitors with the reality of recurring injustices and discrimination.

This exhibition is the result of the two-year research project, "Hepworth’s Progeny," guided by an Advisory Board including Griselda Pollock, Lorna Green, Eleanor Clayton, Sokari Douglas Camp, Jill McKnight, and Dr. Alice Correia. Co-curated by Dr. Anna Douglas and Dr. Kerry Harker, the project revisited research from the late 1980s by Lorna Green, exploring women artists in the expanding field of sculpture. Green's M.Phil thesis at the University of Leeds, titled "The Position and Attitudes of Contemporary Women Sculptors in Britain 1987-89," laid the groundwork for this insightful exhibition.
